MONEYGAME explores the intersection of sexuality, labor, and power within the economies of erotic performance.
Created between 2014 and 2019, the series documents strippers working in clubs across the United States. Photographed primarily on analog film, the project combines intimate portraiture with documentary observation to reveal the discipline, athleticism, and community that exist behind the spectacle of the stage.
Working in close collaboration with her subjects, Waterman challenges reductive narratives surrounding sex work, presenting dancers not as objects of voyeurism but as individuals navigating complex economic and social realities.
The images presented here are drawn from the original body of work published as the monograph MONEYGAME in 2019, which marked the beginning of Waterman’s long-term investigation into sexuality, performance, and labor—an inquiry that continues in later projects including Candyland, MONEYGAME: Thailand, and Propulsion.
