The New God (2013–2016)
The New God presents a constellation of portraits of young artists and cultural figures in New York City at a moment when a new generation was beginning to reshape the city’s creative landscape.
Created between 2013 and 2016, the series brings together more than 150 portraits of individuals working across art, nightlife, music, fashion, and performance. Photographed in intimate settings throughout New York, the images capture a generation defining itself through experimentation, independence, and new forms of creative expression.
Taken together, the portraits form a collective portrait of a cultural moment when emerging artists and performers were redefining the social and artistic identity of the city. The project also marks the beginning of Waterman’s long-term engagement with performance culture and nightlife communities, themes that would later develop in series such as Revelry, Gorgeous Drag, and MONEYGAME.
The series was first presented in a solo exhibition at Wallplay in New York City in 2013.
